FOLLOW HIM

by K. Lewis

Hey Everyone.  This is K.  Today I want to talk about Hebrews 11:8.  The Passion Translation version says, “Faith motivated Abraham to obey God’s call and leave the familiar to discover the territory he was destined to inherit from God.  So he left with only a promise and without even knowing ahead of time where he was going.  Abraham stepped out in faith.”

My subject today is about following God.  Following HIM on the journey of your life together with Him. Trusting Him to get you where you need to go, when you need to get there, how you need to get there.  He knows the way, we don’t, and we don’t have to. All we have to do is follow Jehovah Rohi, God our Shepard.

So, I have a question for you, a question I had to ask myself: Are you in the camp of people who did what Abraham did, and followed God to the destiny He had for you in the season you are currently in? That’s a good camp to be in; it’s a good camp to stay in.  But, life doesn’t always work out that way.

There have been seasons when we’ve all also landed in the other camp.  Right? The camp where we looked at our life and wondered, “how did I get here”?  Perhaps we forgot that He is not the God of the Shortcuts, and took the easy more accessible road.  Perhaps we followed Him perfectly for a while, and then lost faith on the journey to our promise when obstacles got too big for us. Perhaps that’s the camp you’re in now. The camp of “how did I get here?” or the camp of “how do I get out of this mess?”

What’s the proper response when we find ourselves there? We repent, we grab hold of our faith, and then we do what Abraham, the father of our faith did according to Hebrews 11:8 - We get back to basics, and we obey and follow. Simple; but not easy. Right? Thank God we have Holy Spirit abiding on the inside to help us along the way. Did you know that Abraham didn’t have that? Holy Spirit fell ON people in the Old Testament, but He didn’t dwell on the inside of them continually.  He fell on them for whatever purpose they needed and then departed.  So, without the continual indwelling Spirit of God, Abraham fulfilled God’s purpose for his life.  That means that you and I can get out of the camp of “how did I get here?” and  get back on course to obeying and following God to fulfill His purpose for us and receive the promise He has for us in each season of our lives.

Now don’t get me wrong.  I know that obeying and following, especially when we don’t know where the path leads and what obstacles we’ll meet along the way, is hard to do.  Especially if we’re doing it using our own wisdom and worldly knowledge, or if we’re doing it based on what other people think or in the shadow of past experience, good or bad.

2 Chronicles 20:12 (NIV) says, “For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on You.”

Obedience doesn’t require wisdom or knowledge.  It doesn’t require you to have been there and done that.  It doesn’t require the approval of friends and family.  Obedience requires faith.  Faith says, “God, my eyes are on You. I don’t know about this, but I know about You, so I’m going to go where You say go.”  Faith says, “God this way looks dark and dangerous, but You are the light, so I’m going to trust you to deliver me from whatever comes my way.”  Faith says, “God I know that You love me and that You have a purpose for everything I encounter on this journey, so even in the face of this vast army, I believe that whatever You lead me to, You will lead me through.”
